Your Time's Up, I Don’t Want You
Chapter 1
"Lina, are you really thinking of quitting now when your career is taking off?" Tammy asked in surprise from the other end of the phone.
Lina paused briefly before responding confidently, "Yes, I'm sure. I'll be holding a press conference in a week, and that's also when my flight overseas leaves. Could you help me with the arrangements on the international front?"
Tammy didn't press further. She understood that once Lina made up her mind, there was no changing it.
After ending the call, an Instagram notification appeared, "Eric Absom, CEO of the Absom Group, spent 50 million to buy a rare diamond."
In the accompanying video, Eric grinned as he participated in an interview.
"Mr. Absom, what motivated you to spend 50 million on this diamond? Although diamonds are valuable, such a small gem doesn't seem to justify that price."
The comment section below quickly erupted with admiration for Eric's devotion to his wife.
"This man truly knows how to love—Mrs. Absom is so lucky! I heard that even though the diamond is small, it holds great significance. It was personally crafted by the King for his wife. He only ever loved one woman, so this diamond not only is of excellent quality but also symbolizes unwavering love."
"No surprise! Eric and the renowned author Lina are famous for their deep connection. Eric was even willing to forfeit his inheritance rights just to marry Lina back then."
"Plus, they've been married for five years, and even though Lina hasn't gotten pregnant yet, and the Absom family has a limited lineage, they've never been involved in any scandals. Eric continues to cherish Lina as if she's everything to him—what a fairy-tale romance that many people admire!"
***
Lina smiled wryly, her finger pausing on Eric's image. He was just as handsome and charming as he had been during their college days.
Back then, Lina had made a name for herself at Harvard University after her article was published in the school journal. With her striking appearance, she naturally attracted many admirers. Among them, Eric was the most persistent. Lina's aloof and detached demeanor often deterred others, but Eric pursued her for four entire years.
Despite Lina's cold remarks and others' sarcastic comments, Eric remained focused on being with her. During a fire in the dormitory building, Eric dashed into the flames like a madman to save Lina, who was barely conscious. He nearly lost his life, spending two long months in the hospital before recovering. That event marked the beginning of Lina's emotional openness to him.
When Lina finally agreed to be with him, she said, "Eric, I've been abandoned many times in my life. If you ever betray me, I will leave you without hesitation, because I refuse to be abandoned again."
"Eric, I've been left behind by others for half my life. If you ever betray me, I won't hesitate to leave, because I refuse to be abandoned again."
Lina's early years were harsh. When she was just five, her father left her and her mother for another woman. The following year, her mother, overwhelmed by the loss, drowned herself in a river. Lina's grandmother, her sole remaining family member, was diagnosed with cancer before Lina began college and chose to end her life to avoid becoming a burden. Throughout her life, Lina had faced nothing but loss and separation, learning that she could only depend on herself.
That day, with tears in his eyes, Eric embraced her tightly.
"Don't worry, Lina. I promise you'll never have to make that choice."
Despite opposition from his family, Eric married Lina right after they graduated. He treated her with the care of a father, and over the next five years, his love for her only deepened, making him the perfect partner—loving and wealthy—in the eyes of others.
However, while promises are easy to make, they are hard to keep. Eric was no exception. A month ago, Lina uncovered his affair. For the past six months, he had significantly increased his overtime and business trips. It turned out that every moment he wasn't with her, he was with another woman.
Lina set her phone aside and started to pack her belongings. Material things didn't mean much to her—aside from a few cherished books and simple clothing, she owned little else.
Unable to take the books with her, she found a cardboard box, packed them, and got ready to donate them to a charity. She then wrote "Divorce Agreement" on a sheet of paper. The decision had been made as soon as she discovered Eric's unfaithfulness. Initially, she was stunned, but soon all she could think about was how to leave. This time, she wouldn't be the one left behind—though choosing to walk away gave her no pleasure.
When Eric came back, he was smiling brightly. Lina rarely expressed her preferences, but she had instantly liked this ancient diamond, so he had spared no expense to purchase it for her.
"Honey, come take a look—is this the one you wanted?" he asked, wrapping an arm around her waist and presenting a small box like it was a treasure.
He still looked at Lina with the same intensity as ever, but who would have guessed that a man who seemed to cherish her in such high regard could be so deceitful?
Lina caught a whiff of perfume on him that wasn't hers and gently distanced herself. He had left wearing a tie, but now he returned in just a shirt. Lina resisted the temptation to question where he'd been or what he'd done—she simply didn't care anymore.
She picked up the diamond pendant. She had been enchanted by its story involving a King and his wife, but now, envisioning Eric with someone else, her heart felt as though it was being squeezed tightly, crushed repeatedly, and torn apart. Gazing at the diamond again, all she could sense was irony.
"What's the matter? Don't you like it?" Eric asked, puzzled by Lina's reaction.
"No, I love it," Lina replied, forcing a smile that trembled with effort.
Once Eric heard her say she loved it, he relaxed and offered to put the pendant on her. But Lina declined. Such a valuable item should belong to those who truly love each other—and they didn't.
"Something this expensive? I'd be too scared to wear it."
She nonchalantly placed the small box in a cabinet, only to be drawn back into Eric's embrace.
"Lina, nothing in this world is more precious to me than you. You deserve all the best things."
Eric's cologne made her feel a bit queasy. Had he murmured those sweet words to another woman too?
Lina shoved him away and turned around to regain her composure. When she faced him again, she noticed Eric scowling at the stacks of books.
"Are you putting these away? Won't you read them anymore?"
Lina had always treasured these books—many were rare editions that Eric had painstakingly found for her. Even though she was hesitant to give them away, she realized that if she could let go of the person she cared for the most, what else was truly irreplaceable?
"I've read them all. I'm planning to donate them to children in the mountains."
She subtly tightened her fists. "Eric, can't you see? I'm letting go of you just as I'm letting go of these books."
Chapter 2
Eric carefully prepared dinner, making all of Lina's favorite dishes.
"Honey, you've lost some weight lately—have more of this meat," he said, placing her favorite foods right in front of her.
He only started eating his own meal with a smile once he saw her take a bite. To Lina, the food tasted bland and unappetizing, but Eric didn't notice the disappointment in her expression.
"By the way, the Lakeview Estate is nearly finished. Let's invite some friends to go camping there tomorrow!"
Eric had built this vacation villa especially for Lina, remembering that she once mentioning her love for places with mountains and water. He had spent a fortune to buy a lakeside plot and construct the Lakeview Estate just for them.
Lina wanted to decline the plan—she wasn't in the mood to enjoy it now—but Eric had already begun inviting friends on his own. After making the calls, he didn't even finish his meal before starting to pack her things.
"I'll get you a blanket. It might be cold tomorrow. We need to bring your thermos and the tea you like..."
As Eric packed his things, he chatted away, maintaining his usual thoughtful demeanor. Lina couldn't help but laugh at his facade. She thought, "Isn't it exhausting? Cheating while pretending to care for me."
The following morning, Eric took Lina to Lakeview Estate for her first visit. The estate featured a sprawling white castle over an extensive land, surrounded by fields of lilies—her favorite flower—and charming little animals. A place she once would have loved now left her indifferent.
"Hello, Lina!" greeted Andy Soriene, Eric's close friend, along with a few others she barely recognized.
Lina returned their greetings politely and then sat alone as the others busied themselves.
Eric insisted she not do anything. "Honey, just relax and don't overexert yourself."
Eric's behavior didn't surprise anyone. Their social circle knew how devoted he was to her. He brought her fruit platters, wrapped a blanket around her shoulders, and attended to her every need.
"Would you like some of this? I got it just for you."
Lina nodded, prompting Eric to eagerly snatch all the grilled skewers from his friend's hand. He didn't mind being teased as a "friend abandoner for love"—he was too engrossed in watching Lina enjoy each bite. Noticing some sauce on her lips, he quickly grabbed a napkin to wipe it off.
"You've turned into a little tabby cat. Have some juice—your lips have been dry lately, and you need more vitamins."
He handed her a glass of juice with care, only smiling with satisfaction once she had finished it.
"Honey, being with you like this is wonderful. If you love it here, should we come every week?"
Lina smiled but thought, "Every week? I'm afraid next time, it won't be me—he'll be with another woman."
Feeling bored, Lina opened Instagram and came across a photo posted by Bonnie Sobre with the caption, "Vacation with my husband today." The picture was taken at Lakeview Estate. Lina's hands began to tremble uncontrollably. Bonnie was the woman Eric was cheating with, and she was also the president of Lina's fan club. A month ago, Lina had discovered Eric's affair through Bonnie's Instagram. She thought, "He really can't keep away from her, can he? Even while camping with me, he has to bring Bonnie along."
"Wow, Bonnie, I'm so envious! You just returned from the Maldives last week, and now you're in another beautiful spot. Your husband is truly incredible."
"Right now, besides being jealous of Lina, I'm also envious of Bonnie—how do some people get all the good fortune?"
"Bonnie, could you introduce us to your husband too? We're all eager to know what kind of man is so perfect!"
***
Lina bit her lip in distress while reading the comments in the fan group. She wasn't sure how long Bonnie and Eric had been together, but she knew Bonnie was her polar opposite—a vivacious, cheerful girl who was not only beautiful but also full of enthusiasm.
"Don't worry, everyone. I'll introduce him to you later."
As soon as Bonnie sent off this reply, Eric's phone rang. Lina observed him as he smiled, lowered his head, and concentrated on typing a message, displaying a brightness in his smile she'd never witnessed before—so bright that he subconsciously licked his lips.
"You all enjoy yourselves first. I've got a conference call to handle."
He turned to Lina and said, "Honey, I need to go for a moment. If you want something to eat, just ask Andy."
Before Lina could say anything, he left his laptop and hurried toward the white castle, seemingly unable to wait. Lina grinned. Were they meeting inside? But Eric had promised she would be the first to stay there.
When she checked the group messages again, Bonnie had uploaded a picture of the castle's entrance hall. In the photo, she was hugging a man and taking a mirror selfie. Even though the man's face wasn't visible, Lina recognized the outfit—it was exactly what Eric was wearing today.
Bonnie wrote, "My husband is shy, so I won't show you his face."
"Wow, he looks tall, wealthy, and handsome even from the back! You're so lucky, Bonnie!"
"His physique is just as good as Eric's!"
***
Bonnie even sent a voice message where the man calling her "Honey." Others might not recognize it, but Lina knew that tone—it was Eric when he was turned on. So he was calling someone else "Honey" too.
Lina forced herself to switch off her phone, her heart racing as if it were she who was having an affair. They had dared to do this here. About an hour later, Eric came out of the castle. His shirt was unbuttoned, revealing a faint lipstick mark, and his exposed collarbone was dotted with uneven love bites—all of which pierced Lina's heart. She wanted to scream at him, "Couldn't you wait? Was it that thrilling to betray me right under my nose?"
"Honey, are you cold? Do you want to go inside and rest?" Eric asked softly, pulling her close and kissing her forehead.
She quickly stood up, unable to endure his affection when he had just been with Bonnie. Every touch from him now made her feel sick.
"I am tired. I want to leave now."
Rest inside? In the room where they had just been together? Lina couldn't bear it.
"What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell? Should we go to the hospital?"
The worry in Eric's eyes appeared genuine. He looked at Lina with concern, but she gently brushed his hand aside, smiling as she shook her head. Before she could say anything, Eric had already lifted her into his arms and headed for the garage.
"Honey, if you're feeling tired, let's head home. Don't worry—I'll always be by your side."
As they walked past the white castle, Lina glanced back and saw Bonnie in pajamas, smiling at her with a laid-back expression. In that instant, Lina realized—it had all been intentional.
Chapter 3
Suddenly, Lina felt lightheaded. Over the past month, she hadn't been eating or sleeping properly. From initial shock to eventual acceptance, each day felt like a year. Truthfully, she was at her breaking point.
"Lina? Are you okay? Please, don't scare me!"
Eric noticed Lina's unusual state and turned pale with fear. He trembled as he held her close, urgently instructing the driver to head to the hospital immediately. He knew her health had always been fragile, so he had always taken great care of her. Now, his voice was thick with anxiety.
"Honey, wake up! We're almost at the hospital."
A tear dropped onto Lina's face, and she slowly opened her eyes. Seeing Eric's red-rimmed eyes, she reached out toward his face, but her hand stopped midway, unable to touch him. She couldn't believe that Eric, who loved her so much, could have betrayed her.
"Eric, I'm alright. I don't need to go to the hospital. I just want to go home."
Eric shook his head, clearly frightened. He insisted that the driver head to the nearest hospital—he needed reassurance that she was okay before he could relax. When Lina had fainted, Eric had been consumed by fear and, for the first time, felt guilty regarding her.
Fortunately, all the tests came back with no serious issues. The doctor explained that she had been overthinking and was a bit malnourished, then gave her two injections of nutritional fluids. Lina lay in the hospital bed, watching Eric rush in and out, feeling no affection at all. She even pondered, "If I had died just now, would he feel guilty for the rest of his life?" Then she mocked herself as she thought, "What's done is done. What was she still hoping for?"
"Honey, I was so scared just now. Promise me you'll take better care of yourself, okay? Your life is important to me, and you have to stay alive."
Eric held Lina's hand tightly against his face. She gazed at him for a while. Yes, I should live well—but not for him. For myself. Eric's phone kept vibrating in his pocket. When it rang for the seventh time, Lina urged him to pick it up. He reluctantly pulled out his phone, and as soon as he saw the caller ID, a hint of panic flashed across his face.
"Go back to sleep. I'll step out to take this call."
Somehow, Lina found herself trailing after him. As they reached the end of the corridor, she heard Eric's soft voice, "Honey, what's wrong? We just said goodbye—are you missing me already? You're such a tease."
Lina stifled her complaints, covering her mouth. Just moments earlier, he'd been worried about her, yet now he was instantly flirting with someone else. She thought, "When did Eric become like this?"
"Alright, I'll be there soon. Let me show you what happens when you're naughty. Wait for me. Love you."
In a state of panic, Lina hurried back to the ward. When Eric returned, his face was apologetic.
"Sorry, honey. Something urgent has come up at work. I'll have to leave. Can you take a taxi home later?"
Lina wanted to ask him, "What truly matters most to you? Our marriage? Our vows? Or just the thrill?" But the words remained unspoken. She nodded in understanding.
"Go ahead. Work is important."
If Eric had lingered a moment longer, he might have noticed the sorrow and despair in her eyes. But he didn't. He turned and left in a hurry, forgetting even to say goodbye, eager to answer another woman's call.
When Lina finally arrived home, it was already late into the night. Eric hadn't sent any messages. Looking around the empty house, she headed to his study and started packing up everything that belonged to her. If she was leaving, she intended to do so thoroughly—Eric didn't deserve to retain a single item of hers, not even a strand of hair.
As dawn approached, Lina still couldn't find sleep. She opened Instagram and saw Bonnie's latest post right at the top of her feed—Bonnie had tagged her specifically.
"Husband cooked my favorite fish tonight. I'll have to work extra hard later!"
Even though the figure in the photo was out of focus, Lina recognized it as Eric. Fish was his specialty dish. So, he cooked for Bonnie too. She realized she wasn't his only priority anymore.
Beneath the post, there were numerous congratulatory comments.
"Bonnie, if you keep flaunting like this, we're going to team up and steal your husband!"
"Yeah, give us single folks a break!"
"Wishing you and your hubby a joyful 'intimate' life forever!"
***
Lina felt like her heart was bleeding, the life draining slowly into the cold floor. The piece of her soul that had cherished Eric was disappearing along with it.
Chapter 4
With just three days remaining until the launch of her new book, Lina took to Instagram to announce she would retire from writing on the day of the event. The following evening, Eric rushed home and immediately asked Lina, "Honey, what did you mean by that post? Why do you want to stop writing?"
Lina let out a bitter laugh. So he did check Instagram. Had he noticed Bonnie's provocations against her? Or was he so lenient with Bonnie that he chose to overlook them?
In recent years, several of Lina's books had been turned into films and TV series, establishing her as a rising star in the literary world. Producers were eager to adapt her work. Quitting now would be a huge setback for her career, and even Eric recognized that.
"I just don't want to write anymore. I'm completely worn out."
She didn't mention that since discovering his affair, she hadn't been able to write a single word. The love she once cherished had plunged her into despair, making life feel unbearable. It felt as if she had lost her soul overnight, with no drive left to create.
Eric grinned and embraced her warmly, gently running his fingers through her hair.
"You gave me quite a scare. I was worried something might have happened. If you're feeling exhausted, Honey, just take a break from writing—your husband has more than enough money to support you."
Lina returned the smile. Indeed, with Eric's status, he could easily provide for many women like her. However, she no longer wished to be known as Mrs. Absom. She wanted to be Lina, her true self.
"Tomorrow is your birthday. How would you like to celebrate?"
Lina shifted the conversation. She wasn't interested in watching Eric put on a show for her. Every year, his birthday was marked with a large gathering, and this year seemed no different.
"Andy and the others have planned a get-together. It's the same as always, nothing new."
Eric gazed at Lina with curiosity. There was something different about her today, though he couldn't quite figure out what it was. Despite her gentle smile and soft words, a hint of unease lingered within him, unsure of its origin.
"Alright, celebrating with everyone will surely be festive!"
On Eric's birthday, he still went to work as usual. Lina gave the household staff the day off. While the house was empty, she hired a moving company to donate all her useful belongings and sell the rest. In no time, half the house was emptied, and the sight of the bare rooms left Lina feeling just as empty inside.
That evening, Lina arrived at the meeting spot half an hour early. As she was about to enter, she overheard Eric speaking.
"Lina will be here tonight. Be careful with your words, everyone. If anyone mentions Bonnie, don't blame me for not being nice."
Andy scoffed, saying, "Eric, you're such a jerk. You act like the perfect husband while having an affair with that mistress. Aren't you worried Lina will eventually find out and leave you?"
Eric paused before responding, "Andy, you're single, so you wouldn't understand how mundane marriage can become. I used to think I'd never get bored, but once I experienced something different, I realized I'd been wasting my time. Other women offer something unique. Lina has always been my favorite, but who says you can't appreciate someone's body while still loving them?"
Laughter filled the room, but Lina's tears had already started to fall. Hearing Eric's words hurt her more deeply than Bonnie's Instagram posts ever had. It seemed that in this world, true loyalty was a myth. Despite the fact that Eric had once risked his life for her, he was still capable of loving other women, wasn't he?
Lina took a moment to regain her composure and adjust her smile before entering the private room. As soon as she walked in, everyone fell silent, afraid of saying something they shouldn't.
"Honey, what took you so long? I was about to go out and get you."
With a polite nod and smile, Lina sat next to Eric. She would play along—for both his sake and hers.
"There was a bit of traffic."
The table was covered with over 20 dishes, all of Lina's favorites. She liked mild flavors, so nearly every dish was free of chili, even though Eric's friends loved spicy food.
The room was free of tobacco and alcohol because Lina had a sensitive trachea and couldn't tolerate the smell. Eric had declared that no smoking or drinking was allowed while Lina was there.
The conversation at the table was courteous, without any profanity or crude jokes, as Lina was averse to foul language.
Everything seemed unchanged, yet Lina felt everything had shifted. It was as if everyone's eyes were filled with mockery and disdain when they looked at her. They all believed she was unaware of Eric's affair and were aiding him in maintaining the facade. However, they didn't realize that Lina now saw them as part of the charade. Each one had played a role in bringing her and Eric's relationship to its breaking point.
"Eric, I'm finished eating. Please take your time."
Lina had never been unreasonable. She appreciated everything Eric did for her and always allowed him enough freedom. Just like every birthday dinner, she understood everyone felt restricted by her presence, so she would always set her utensils down and leave early. The moment she spoke, everyone at the table visibly eased.
"Is that all you ate? Didn't you like the dishes? Or are you feeling unwell again? Should I order more of your favorite dishes?"
Eric felt uneasy when he noticed Lina had barely touched her food. He checked her forehead, relieved to find she didn't have a fever.
"Thank goodness you don't have a temperature. Is the smell bothering you? It's alright—I can take you to our usual spot," he suggested, ready to leave the table.
But Lina caught his arm and shook her head, "It's okay, really. I'm just full. You all should stay and enjoy yourselves—it's not often everyone can meet up. I'll be heading out."
As she left, everyone stood to see her off. Eric attempted to follow, but Lina pushed him gently back into his seat.
"You're the birthday boy—you can't leave. I'll call when I get home. Don't worry."
Eric reluctantly kissed her hand, wishing her a safe trip home. Lina smiled softly and turned away, thinking to herself, "This is the last performance I'll do for you, Eric. Are you happy now?" Once outside, she leaned against the wall to compose herself, worried she'd break down if she stayed any longer.
"Wow, Eric, that was tiring. Let's get the drinks flowing! Why is Lina so high-maintenance? She's nothing like Bonnie."
"Yeah, she's gone now—let's invite that little minx over!"
As the group laughed, Lina exited the restaurant, finally feeling a sense of calm. She no longer cared if they brought in anyone else. From this point on, it didn't matter to her anymore.
Chapter 5
Eric was missing all night once more. After Lina posted that message on Instagram, she deleted the app—she couldn't bear to see Bonnie's provocations any longer. However, Bonnie, relentless as ever, didn't stop. She sent Lina a direct message.
"Lina, quit pretending. I know you've found out about me and Eric."
"He loves me now. Soon, I'll be the most important person in his life. Just wait until you're left behind."
"If you don't believe me, check Instagram."
When Lina read the word "left behind," she couldn't hold back anymore—she dissolved into tears. All the emotions she'd been suppressing burst forth in that instant. Although she had planned to let go first, it still felt like she was being abandoned—not by Eric, but by love itself.
With shaky hands, she reinstalled Instagram. She was determined to see why Bonnie was so sure she could take her place. Bonnie had posted three updates in a row, each one cutting deeper into Lina's heart.
"It's my husband's birthday today. As his wife, of course I need to take care of his brothers."
The photo showed Bonnie surrounded by everyone at the dining table. She perched on Eric's lap, and he leaned in to give her a passionate kiss.
"This marks the fourth birthday I've celebrated with him. We'll have many more four-year stretches in the future."
The photos that followed were birthday pictures from each year, neatly arranged in a series of four on the screen.
"This is the greatest birthday present I've ever given him. Congratulations to my husband. He's going to be a father!"
The next images showed a positive pregnancy test and a side profile of Eric smiling.
Instead of feeling angry, Lina laughed. It seemed Eric's friends knew Bonnie too. They had been together for four years, and now Bonnie was expecting Eric's twins.
She didn't bother turning on the light. Clad in thin clothing, she sat on a cold chair, repeatedly scrutinizing each photo Bonnie had shared. Each glance felt like a slow form of torture, yet she couldn't tear herself away. She despised herself for being naïve all those four years and trusting Eric's promises.
Lina had become used to Eric being away overnight. She eventually drifted off just before dawn and slept until afternoon, when Eric woke her.
"You little sleepyhead, how can you sleep so much? Breakfast is ready, come on, get up!"
Eric leaned down to kiss her cheek, and Lina quickly acted like she was just waking up. Oddly enough, she didn't feel any sadness seeing him now. The old Lina seemed to have vanished in Bonnie's Instagram posts and during those five years when she loved Eric most.
"I'm hungry anyway. Let's go eat."
Before she could put on her shoes, Eric picked her up and carried her to the bathroom.
"Honey, let me assist you while you freshen up."
Lina didn't resist, just let him carry her stiffly. She thought, "After today, Eric, we'll be strangers. Save this kind of affection for Bonnie and your child. I'm leaving your life."
As Lina went downstairs, Eric was rushing up, looking tense. When he came back, he'd been too preoccupied with cooking to notice the changes at home. It wasn't until he entered the study that he realized many things were missing. Lina's cherished ornaments, the rocking chair she often used, even the trophies she took pride in.
"Honey, why is the study empty of your stuff?"
Lina simply smiled as she continued her way downstairs.
"I'm planning to renovate the house soon, so I stashed away some important things."
Eric was skeptical—she'd never mentioned anything about renovating before. But if that's what she wanted, he'd go along with it. Still, he couldn't quite grasp why only her belongings were packed. Lina didn't let him ponder it for long, guiding him to the dining table.
Although she had little appetite, Lina made herself taste a bit of each dish. As she watched Eric busy in the kitchen, she spoke softly, "Eric, you'll be at tomorrow's new book launch, right?"
Eric nodded, smiling back at her.
"Of course, I wouldn't miss your final book launch as a writer.
"Honey, after tomorrow, how about we go abroad to relax?"
Lina nodded. She was going abroad—but not with him.
Chapter 6
Everyone was aware that Lina was leaving the literary world, and social media had been buzzing with the news for days. Lina had disabled comments on her posts. Her latest book was a final goodbye to her fans, and the demand for signed copies was far greater than anticipated.
Eric had only noticed the changes in the study. Had he looked more closely, he would have realized that aside from Lina, the divorce papers, and that jade pendant, nothing else in the house was hers anymore.
As Lina departed, she couldn't resist glancing back. This place had hosted her dream for five years and witnessed its demise. Once she left, there would be no return.
"Honey, what are you looking at? It's time to head to the venue," Eric called from next to the car.
Lina smiled and walked forward confidently. Leaving this place felt like a new beginning. Lina, you deserve a better life.
When they arrived at the venue, a crowd had already gathered. Just as they were about to go in, Eric got a call from Bonnie.
"Eric, my stomach is in pain. Can you take me to the hospital?"
Eric's face turned pale with worry.
"Don't worry. I'll be there right away!"
After ending the call, Eric looked at Lina, who smiled, waiting for him to speak. She knew only Bonnie could make him react this way, and she was curious about his decision. But Eric shattered her last hope—he chose Bonnie.
"Honey, there's an urgent matter at the company. I'm sorry, but I can't go to the launch with you. I'm really sorry."
In that moment, Lina felt a sense of calm. Thank you, Eric, for helping me let go.
"It's alright. Go handle it. This isn't really that important anyway."
Eric gave her a grateful kiss on the forehead, as though he had just been granted a royal decree.
"Sorry, honey. I'll come back to pick you up later, I promise. Wait for me."
Even before his words had fully faded, Eric was already gone. That was when Lina got a message from Bonnie.
"Lina, haven't you given up yet? I've been more important than you for ages—in bed and in his heart. I think you should quit while you're ahead. After all, I'm pregnant with the Absom family's heir. That alone makes you irrelevant."
Lina barely glanced at the message before lifting her head and walking confidently into the venue. She hadn't lost—she just decided not to be part of a love triangle anymore. The one who lets go first is always the real winner.
"Lina, thank you for your words that have been with me all these years. No matter where you are, we'll always be your fans."
"Lina, if you ever want to come back, we'll still be your strongest support."
"Lina, remember you still owe me a script! I'm keeping track!"
***
As Lina gazed at the lively crowd in front of her, tears began to form in her eyes. Among the attendees were fans, colleagues, and collaborators—all gathered to bid her farewell. However, the one person who should have been steadfastly supporting her was instead standing beside another woman.
At that moment, a notification from Instagram appeared. It was Bonnie's latest post.
"Two little troublemakers, you gave mommy and daddy quite a scare! So relieved you're both alright."
The photo showed a pair of hands placed on her belly, with the man's shiny wedding ring piercing someone's heart—though it was unclear whose.
Lina moved to the center of the stage and offered a deep bow to the audience.
"Thank you for your love and support throughout the years. Although I'm hesitant to leave the literary world, I will hold each of you dear in my heart. May your lives shine even brighter than mine!"
With tears mingling with her smile, Lina said goodbye to the crowd. It didn't trouble her that Eric wasn't there—wasn't she surrounded by numerous people who truly cared? He was just a callous man; why cling to him?
As the autumn breeze turned chillier, who could tell how many others would drift apart during this solitary season?
Lina took a taxi directly from the event to the airport—her luggage had already been sent ahead. She felt fleeting gratitude that Bonnie had kept Eric occupied, sparing her the need to make up an excuse to leave unnoticed. Lina chuckled at herself wryly; in retrospect, Bonnie wasn't entirely the villain.
From the moment she entered the airport, she never once glanced back. As the plane ascended from the city, Lina finally released a deep breath. She had left behind not just a man, but also a career she had once passionately loved. From this point forward, it was truly a new beginning.
Chapter 7
When Tammy received Lina's call, it had been over ten hours. The two hadn't seen each other for three years. When they met again, they hugged each other tightly. She was the closest person to Lina in the world, besides Eric. Now that she didn't want Eric anymore, she only had Tammy.
"Lina, welcome to Switzerland!"
Tammy didn't ask about her and Eric, she knew that if Lina hadn't given up on him, just like she did with Andy back then.
"Tammy, from now on, you have to take care of me."
The two of them chatted and laughed all the way back to Tammy's house. Lina, who had put everything down, slept well for the first time in over a month, while Eric stayed up all night.
He received a call from Bonnie, leaving Lina alone, hurried to her place. At the moment he saw Bonnie, he began to regret a little. She was wearing sexy lingerie, with a tempting look in her eyes, all telling him that he had been deceived.
"Weren't you feeling unwell? Why are you dressed like this?"
Eric felt a little uncomfortable in his heart. He had been so excited just now, would Lina think too much? Today was the day she withdrew from the literary world, he was not by her side to accompany her, but ran here to see other women, he seemed a little excessive.
"Eric, we haven't exercised for several days. I miss you! If I didn't say that, how would you come to accompany me?"
Seeing Eric's displeasure, she softly leaned on his shoulder and apologized. She knew of course what day it was today. She wanted Eric to be by her side on all of Lina's important days. She wasn't afraid that Eric would be angry, after all, the child in her belly was her only capital.
Today, Eric was somehow restless, especially when he thought of Lina at the press conference, he felt even more uneasy. He comforted himself, "No need to feel guilty, I have already been good enough to Lina."
Just a second ago, Eric, who was restless and agitated, fell into Bonnie's arms. He could never resist Bonnie's embrace. It had been a long time since they had been together. He thought Lina would still be waiting for him, but he didn't know that desperate woman, whom he would never see again.
Eric was pestered by Bonnie from morning until evening. Contrary to his usual self, he did not get much enjoyment. He was always absent-minded, always thinking about Lina.
"I have to go."
Eric got up and dressed. "No matter what, he had to go back and accompany Lina tonight," Bonnie's eyes turned slightly red in an instant as she touched her slightly bulging belly.
"The babies, dad didn't want to be with us anymore."
Eric felt a bit annoyed, Bonnie's enthusiasm was like fire, always making him unable to resist, but she had always been sensible, never disturbing his life with Lina. For some reason, recently, Bonnie had been more and more persistent in her pursuit of him.
"Bonnie, you had better be clear about your own identity, don't try to trap me with anything!"
Bonnie knew Eric's personality. She realized that if she continued to pester him, she wouldn't get any good results, so she decided to let him go.
Eric didn't look at her again, hurriedly left, he misspoke again, recently his neglect of Lina, even he himself felt obvious, but Lina is still as quiet as ever, he just wants to be back by her side right now.
Eric deliberately bought the cake that Lina loves to eat, intending to give it to her as an apology gift. When Eric returned home, it was already ten o'clock at night. The villa was dark, and Eric frowned. In the past, no matter how late he came back, Lina would always have a light on for him. Even if he stayed out all night, there would still be light.
Lina usually goes to bed late. Did she go to bed so early today?
He turned on the light and hurried upstairs to the bedroom.
"Darling, look what I brought for you?"
He felt unusually reassured at the thought of Lina sleeping peacefully in her pajamas, but when he opened the door, he was greeted by an empty room. It was only then that he realized Lina's dressing table was missing from the room, leaving only a bed, lonely in the bedroom. The bedding on the bed was also unfamiliar to him, and Eric felt a sense of foreboding rising in his heart.
"Wife! Are you in the bathroom? Come out quickly, I bought your favorite cake for you!"
In the empty room, only the echo of Eric's voice could be heard, he didn't get any response.
Eric put down the cake, nervously turned on all the lights in the villa, and searched room by room. Even the cloakroom, he searched, but he still couldn't find Lina. He ran upstairs in a panic, opened the wardrobe in the bedroom, where there was nothing belonging to Lina except his clothes. He searched everywhere desperately, but Lina seemed to have never lived here, with no trace of her ever having lived here.
The nanny was woken up by him, and she looked at Eric's flustered and anxious expression with sleepy eyes.
"Sir, what are you doing?"
Eric grabbed her and asked like crazy.
"Where is Lina? Is Lina in your room?"
The nanny shook her head, "How could she be in her own room?"
"Weren't you all going out together? I thought you would come back together."
Yes, they clearly left together, he was supposed to accompany her to the press conference, why did he leave her alone?
Eric trembled as he dialed Lina's number, but it was already out of service. For the first time, he felt a sense of panic. He couldn't find Lina, and even her things were gone.
He couldn't help but let his mind wander, "Has Lina encountered an accident? Could she have gone to the hospital because of illness?" He frantically called his assistant.
"Hey, was Lina's press conference successful today?"
"It went smoothly, without any surprises."
"Where did she go after that?"
The assistant was puzzled. The boss rarely seemed so anxious. Could it be that something had happened to his wife?
"After it ended, she didn't let me walk her home, saying she wanted to take a walk by herself."
Eric hung up the phone, and started searching everywhere again. He finally found the divorce agreement and that small piece of diamond in the study. He was instantly thunderstruck. Lina wanted a divorce? Why? They had always been fine. How could Lina leave him?
Did she already know about Bonnie's situation? It's impossible, he has always been very secretive, and Lina has never shown any signs of suspicion.
He sat on the ground despondently, not knowing where to find her. Lina was the only family he had left in this world. Where could she have gone?
"Mom Liu, when did Lina's things get moved out? Why didn't anyone tell me?"
He suddenly realized that Lina's departure may have had signs beforehand, but he had always ignored them. His voice grew louder and louder, frightening the nanny who trembled along with it.
"Your wife's things were all moved out recently in the past week. She said she wanted to renovate the house, so we didn't ask much!"
Eric sat on the ground, holding his head in pain. He finally understood why he had been restless all day. He began to regret. "If he hadn't left the venue today, if he had stayed with Lina, would she have not left?"
He looked up at the books on the shelf, remembering a few days ago when Lina threw away those books, remembering her sudden decision to quit the literary world, remembering the disappeared furniture and her favorite little items. It turned out she had planned it all along, but he loved her so much, how could she bear to do it?
She clearly loved him too, right? How could she possibly want a divorce from him?
